Litter Reduction
Description:
I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly picking up trash in our streets. Some come from trash cans not being properly secured. Some from people that simply get tired of looking for a place to throw their pop can.
Possible solutions include;
a.) Work with Rubatino’s to identify folks that don’t secure their garbage and give them warnings and then fines
b.) Offer people free bungee cords to secure their garbage can lids and
c.) Place some litter containers at various places where pedestrians walk.
Progress:
a.) Interviewed Larry from Rubatino’s about the reasons for litter in our neighborhoods. He said that unsecured garbage and garbage can lids are by far the greatest cause of our litter.
b.) Proposed a few possible solutions including offering free bungee cords to worst customers so that they can secure their lids.
c.) Larry agreed an inexpensive first step would be to simply notify the top 10 worst offenders on each of the Rubatino’s drivers routes by taping a flier to their garbage cans as needed asking them to please secure their garbage can lids (click on the litter image in the Links section below to see an example).
d.) Private funds paid for the printing of over 200 warning notices and a dozen rolls of duct tape.
Next Steps:
1.) Contact Larry in a month to assess the campaigns success.
2.) We need to meet with City Engineering to discuss a trial program to place small trash cans at various neighborhood locations.
3.) Another good idea will be to initiate a “just pick it up” litter program. The message is it doesn’t matter how it got there or who did it but let’s all do our part to keep not just our property free of litter, but why not stop and pick up that fast food trash on the side walk instead of leaving it for the next person.

Volunteers:
1.) If each of us just picked up one item of litter each day we’d have the cleanest Neighborhood in the Country!
